i don't know about you , but i'm glad that fall is here. like most people, i think, fall is my favorite time of year. it's taken a bit for it to arrive in these parts (n. california) but this weekend it dropped in on us with a vengeance--major rain storm. actually, i think a little bit of winter showed up as well. anyway, true fall weather always calls for a wardrobe change, so i thought i'd whip a little something up. i am thinking shopping in the city here. i know what you are thinking, "what's with those shoes, saucymom? not really for walking." you're right, but i am having a bit of a ~~bootie~~ shootie moment and i really like these with the cropped minnie pants. but, if the shopping trip is really shopping and not just popping into a few stores to browse on either side of a long and fabulous lunch at your favorite cafe with your bestie, try a leopard print flat.

hello, sweet chickens! it’s been toooo looong. well, i’m back…i think. anyway, enough of all that--let’s start back with an amazing, no PHENOMENAL, house. it’s the butterfly house, one of only five true ocean front properties in carmel, california. can you imagine waking to that view every day? those icky home-staging, 80s furnishings would have to vamoose, but i think i could hang there for a couple of days. enjoy, mes amis.

good morning, chickens! the baton has been passed from ashley-nicole and today it is my turn to share 'what home means to me'. been wondering what that 'pin it forward' badge is all about over there? well i am lucky enough to be part of a project conceived by the lovely victoria at sfgirlbybay and the folks at pinterest, the online software that let's you bookmark your favorite images and catalog them--it. is. awesome. so let's get this party started. these are the things i dream about...

lots of light, a big family table and a place of my own to work, make things and dream.

a big oak tree to sit under with family and friends, some great food and drink and beautiful flowers (that i don't have to take care of).

my boys (big and small).

this simple little outfit is just that—simple. who needs the added work of getting all gussied up for sunday mother’s day brunch? this ensemble allows you to look fabulous with very little effort. how, you ask? because the dress does most of the work.

this listing is AMAZING! in these little real estate posts i try to find properties that are attainable...they aren't always super inexpensive and, let's face it, the ones in california are always going to be pricey. but to find a place like this in a place like this is almost unheard of--that is to say that finding a beautifully restored (ok, it is tiny, but that is par for the coarse in these parts AND part of the charm) cottage in carmel for under $1 million dollars is close to being a miracle. usually $1 million gets you a tear down.

this little gem was built in 1930 and has been beautifully maintained. as the listing* notes it has been tastefully modernized while keeping that classic carmel charm. can you believe that dutch door? (you know i am a sucker for such things) and that breakfast nook...love!

so why is the address"0"? homes and businesses in this one-square mile village have no street numbers (there are no street lights or parking meters either!) the village was originally an artist colony and many of the cottages were built by the artists and writers who settled there. most of them named their houses instead of establishing street numbers. in an effort to preserve the community, the planning commission has upheld this tradition.

Oh, Yosh. I’ll never forget the first time I saw you—it’s like a Polaroid picture in my mind. It was at our house on 63^rd Street. You and Cassie were nose-to-nose in the roses next to the driveway. She was busy posturing to let you know she wasn’t down with you hanging around her house and you had that look on your face that would come to be a symbol of your personality--everybody’s friend, a lover, oblivious to the aggressions of others. I even remember the words I said when I discovered you: “What a funny looking little face”.

You had the prettiest blue eyes. You were scrawny, just a kitten, a stray. Your fur was thin and rangy. With two dogs and a cat, we had our hands full, but we took you in and fed you. I even gave you a bath which you didn’t like. We tried to find a home for you but soon found you were meant to be ours. With proper nutrition and love you grew to be a stunning cat. Everyone remarked on how pretty and sweet you were. At one of your pet visits we discovered that you were a Ragdoll.

Through the years you had your share of accidents—first a car tried to get you, then a wild animal, then you suffered from crystals in your urine that almost killed you. A few years later, you got a cataract in your eye. The doc said it was probably from your first car tangle. About a year ago, you had your eye removed. You were still our beautiful Yoshi, though, with your black mask and white chin, socked feet and white-tipped tale and we loved you. Sure you could be a pest. You loved your peeps and always wanted a lap to sit on. Let’s face it you had a lot of competition with two little boys running around. Then last night a car finally got you. I found you this morning on the neighbor’s yard. I could see something laying in the grass, but that white-tipped tale was like a bulls-eye and my heart sank as I knew it was you and I knew you were dead. At first I couldn’t believe it but I now know it is true.

To say that I am devastated by your loss is an understatement. I’ll miss you so much. I’ll miss your fur all over the clean piles of laundry. I’ll miss catching you sleeping in the sink. I’ll miss seeing most of your 16 pounds spilling over the back of the couch as you take a nap. I’ll miss seeing you run up to me in the driveway when I get home from work, seeing you laying in the chair on the front porch and I’ll miss scratching that white-dotted chin. I’ll miss a hundred other things that I don’t even know right now. I won’t know until I catch myself thinking you are there and realizing you are gone.

I’m am sorry that we couldn’t protect you this time, that we couldn’t intervene as we had all those times before and rescue you from yourself. It breaks my heart thinking, wondering what you went through. I’m sorry. Matt and I both gave you some love this morning before you left our house. We will always love you.

We decided long ago that we wouldn’t have anymore cats after you and I don’t think we will. You were the best cat ever. I don’t want another cat, I just want my Yoshi.

remember this post? well this is what i was talking about. about 6 weeks ago, after locating a breeder we liked, we adopted a welsh corgi. we named him zorro, the spanish word for 'fox'. he is still with his brothers and sisters but will be coming home to us on april 2nd a we are so excited. we visited him yesterday.

since the breeder is in colfax and we were so close to the snow, we drove up the mountain a little and played in the snow for a bit.

it was a great day.

let's call this 'real estate wednesday', shall we? i'm starting a series of regular posts each week and each wednesday will from here forth be known as 'real estate wednesday.' other days of the week have fabulous subjects attached to them and will start on monday. but i couldn't keep this little gem from you, so we are starting mid-week. there are no rules!!

i consider my taste/style to be somewhat eclectic. and i have a thing for eichlers. especially ones in marin county, california, where the setting and weather is to die for. not to mention the hamlet's proximity to san francisco.

here we have a LOVELY alliance built home that has been tastefully restored. as much as i love these homes i am not a huge fan of the natural wood interiors. i love the architectural details, but i find all of that wood a tad oppressive and dark. this specimen has all of the wood work painted out white (i know, purists, i'm so gauche) and the airiness is breathtaking. disregard the bland furnishings they've used for the 'staging' and imagine all of the wonderful colors and textures you could fill this pad with. oh, and that yellow door has me breathless.

feeling a bit scattered but also relaxed at the end of this week. i only worked 2 days this week and i could REALLY get used to that. i was able to clean out the playroom (i even snuck some toys and books to goodwill) and re-organized my craft supplies/books in the office. now i am hoping to actually get some stuff designed, produced and in the shop for easter!

this weekend i am going to work on sprucing up this blog a bit--re-organizing a little and updating the blogroll. i am also thinking a lot about my postings and wanting to get more up each week. i am considering organizing the week by topic. anyway, there is a lot in my little brain, so you will definitely see some changes around these parts--but don't expect them by monday!

in the meantime, these are the things on my mind as we enter the weekend...

i've made this granola recipe two weeks in a row now and it is fabulous. it's a very flexible and easy recipe. we skipped the coconut both weeks and used dried apricots, apple, cherry and date the first week and skipped the date (i'm not a big fan, matt loves them) and did apple, raisins and dried blueberries the second week. yum!

this is my FAVORITE new blog! so much fun. an extravagant take on 'un-mom'. i can't stand how much i love that shell basket purse.

i've been collecting artwork for the house and my office and i am looking for a matisse drawing. thinking about this one.

look, i am going to be honest--i don’t know how I feel about wal-mart. most of my experience with it has been bad and i try not to shop there. but i do know that it is trying to turn itself (or at least its image) around and from time-to-time i hear good things from sources i respect about the innovations it is making. with that said, you may have heard about its new home collection hometrends. i checked it out and, while most of it has a more contemporary zen-thing happening that I don’t personally care for, there are some pieces i think are worth mentioning. i haven’t checked these out in person, so i can't attest to the quality, but I am impressed with some of the collection's designs and use of color. these are my picks. and all except the desk are under 40 smacks.

bought the paperback a few years back with the intention of reading it at christmastime. didn't get to it until this year and it has been so fun! it will definitely be a yearly tradition and i can't wait until i can read it to the boys.

"what? read a book during christmas? who has the time?" you ask? at only 87 pages, you can fit this one in easily. i've been reading a few pages each night before bed and i will finish tonight. it will take you two weeks tops. so run to your nearest library or used book store and pick up a copy so you can get it in before the big day. enjoy!

i am not a particularly religious person, but i have always been drawn to the nativity scene. some of it may be nostalgia, as my grandmother had a beautiful nativity scene complete with wooden crèche that i found facsinating as a child. i don't have one myself, but i decided this year i am going to purchase one for next season. and that leads me to serrv.org--a nonprofit organization with a mission to eradicate poverty wherever it resides by providing opportunity and support to artisans and farmers worldwide. their catalog/website has some of the most beautiful and affordable handcrafts. among these treasures is the most amazing selection of nativities. i've highlighted a few of my favorites here but be sure to check out serrv.org for yourself. there is something for every style made from every material you can imagine. you won't want to miss it!

i've been dreaming of farmhouses lately and found this beauty in delhi, ny, near the catskills about 150 miles from new york city. so quaint. love the charcoal exterior paint, the simple interior architectural details and yes, i love the cow painting in the kitchen.

been thinking a lot about sprucing up some of the rooms at home. the change in seasons usually brings this feeling on. i collect images i find for inspiration. some are for color, others for arranging accessories. i was browsing through my collection today and was taken once again with these. i also noticed that they shared a lot of the same colors. the palette and the shapes are speaking to me now. not too fall, but more like muted summer. i really hate posting images without crediting them, but i am ashamed to say that i can't recall where some of these are from. i will do some digging and update with credits shortly.

i know's, it's been eons since i posted an un-mom outfit--just wasn't feeling the love. but now that fall is here and my attention is turned back to clothing i thought it might be fun to take some of my fall favorites from this post and make a couple of outfits. this first one has me thinking about a weekend day trip, chilly soccer game or even shopping and lunch with a friend (or the kids, if that's your thing). so here goes.

taking the blazer, bag and watch from the fall 09 post i've added:

1. lightweight turtleneck in blue stripe :: old navy :: $15
why it works: enough with the t-shirts already. this nicely fitted t-neck in a nautical stripe won't be too heavy or bunch up under the blazer, but its softness and weight will be comfy without looking sloppy.

2. ‘the dreamer’ boot-cut jeans in blue jet :: old navy or your own closet! :: $34.50
why it works: let's face it, most of us have a pair of old, faded jeans that fit and feel good and if you don't check out old navy's jeans. i'm hard to fit and i usually have good luck with them. plus, they are so reasonably priced and good quality. lots of different cuts and styles. here i''m thinking faded to add some contrast to the dark jacket which is a nice polished alternative to a ratty sweater or fleece jacket.

3. essie nail polish in mink muffs :: essieshop.com or instore at ulta :: $8
why it works: yes, nail polish is an accessory (just ask jenna). essie is great polish--look for sales at places like ulta. i'm LOVING this color right now. it's neutral with just a hint of pink and the medium shade looks good on most skin tones. it's on my toes as we speak.

4. tretorn canvas sneakers in pale oak :: j. crew :: $68
why these work: i wore these under my wedding gown (well, the white ones with the pink swoosh) in 1993--no lie. perhaps a story for another time, though. these are just flipping cute. i'm over the athletic 'trainers'--if you aren't going to the gym, leave them at home. these are fun, casual and retro in such a preppy way--a trifecta of perfection!

5. red scarf with off white design:: dollsofindia.com :: $18
why this works: it is unexpected. the key to looking current in such conservative basics is to add something unexpected. it doesn't have to be trendy or wild, just a little askew from the rest of the outfit. this beauty adds a little global flair.

6. ray ban wayfarer sunglasses in brown :: macy’s :: $109
why these work: what can i say? a classic is a classic. these look good on almost everyone.

And of course she's wearing her pearls and it's almost like an Hermes style vintage scarf -- it's not Hermes, it just looks like it! That classic Betty Draper style. Living in California makes it hard to believe that it is now fall. Our seasons tend to be subtle. Like today for instance, it's about 99 degrees. But it is, nonetheless, the autumnal equinox and being a "fall girl" I had to post some goodies I've been thinking about lately. I just finished doing a major purge of my closet and I am desperately in need of some new clothes. I won't, however, need many of these items until about the end of November. But a girl can dream!

"How do you accidentally buy a pair of shoes?" you ask? My husband will no doubt be posing the same question. If you are me, it all starts on the way back from grabbing a snack you don't need at the deli next door. That's right, I ate candy and bought shoes all as a result of leaving my office. I guess this is why I try not to on most days.

So I am walking back with said candy from said deli and I see this very stylish young woman at the crosswalk. She has on a really cute outfit: black and white houndstooth pencil skirt (looked like lightweight wool) and a pretty white cotton lace blouse with cap sleeves that buttoned up the back. I was standing there thinking to myself that I probably would never have put those two pieces together, since one seemed fallish and the other decidely more casual and for warmer weather. But they really worked together and I was impressed. While waiting for the green man to give me the okay to enter the crosswalk, I stood there daydreaming about what pieces in my wardrobe fit these categories that I should try together when I got home.

Then it happened. I looked down. And there they were. The cutest shoes in that subtle dove gray I've been pining after for a while now.

I followed her into my building, then into the elevator trying to note each detail so that I could google (yes, a verb) them as soon as I returned to my desk. Within minutes I discovered that they are Steve Madden and that every retail outlet I could think of was sold out. I did, however, find a vendor on eBay selling a new pair in a 7.5 (my size, sometimes). This is where the accidental part comes in.

See, this vendor was selling the shoes, not listing them in an auction. Two buttons stood next to the picture: "buy now" and "make and offer". This seemed cool--I could suggest a price. Never encountered this on eBay before. The shoes were listed for $69 which seemed like a fair price. I checked to make sure I could return them if they didn't fit. I decided to click the "make an offer" button. I thought, "How about $49?" then I read the note that suggested I make an offer that seemed "fair" to both the seller and me. I softened and entered $59 and hit enter. The screen immediately lit up congratulating me on my purchase, my offer was accepted and I was now the proud owner of these shoes that may or may not fit. Lucky me. I naively thought the seller would have to think about it and get back to me or something. It never occurred to me that the seller could set an authomatic threshold. Silly me.

Actually, I am happy about it. If they don't fit, I can return them. They are really cute, even if I don't need them and am having a hard time thinking of something I have that I can wear with them. But I am sure it will work out in the end.

The moral of this story? Go to the vending machine in the basement when you need sugar. And next time, lo-ball those offers.

Loyal readers know that my style is pretty classic, even traditional at times. Because I am a Gemini I like to think of myself as eclectic--a lover of good design but open-minded to all periods and styles and not at all predictable. Today, something a little different--an authentic, mid-century rancho designed by architect Cliff May.

I must live in one of these homes before I die. What great bones. You have to look past the somewhat dull furnishings (a least there are no Chippendale armoirs or, egads, country motif wallpaper border which, I kid you not, I have seen in houses of this style and era...a travesty) and take in the amazing layout and architecture. I just wish the posted photos showed the fireplace.

I probably should have been an interior designer or architect (but I hated drafting!!) or at least a real estate agent. I love looking at houses (like you didn't know that already). My husband is always teasing me because I come home with tidbits about houses that are for sale knowing everything about the property from the square footage to the kind of tile the sellers used to remodel the master shower. It's kind of a hobby of mine to peruse real estate listings.

I am almost never impressed at remodels, always wishing the owners stayed true the period and integrity of the architecture. This place is a gem. If only I had a million dollars...and a job in the bay area!

Don't you love the green canisters in the kitchen? I wonder if they'd be willing to throw those in?

eating better

One of my goals lately is to eat better. I am embarassed to say I have atrocious eating habits. Most of them stem from not making the time to eat right and just being lazy. One of the things that has really helped me lately is this "go-to-meal." I ate a ton of this when I was pregnant with Jackson and I really never got tired of it. Lately I've been having it for lunch. It really is filling. And, if you like that whole sweet/tart thing you'll love it. Plus the Grape Nuts make it crunchy which I have to have in a meal or I find myself sometime mid-afternoon munching on high-fat crackers or chips.

As you can see from the "nutrition label" I created for it (you can do that here...it's awesome) it is low in fat and high in fiber and calcium--perfect for us girls.

1 small fuji apple diced into bitesized pieces (with the peel on)
1 small container plain, non-fat yogurt
1/2 cup of Grape Nuts cereal

I have a new friend and her name is Alice Blackwell. She is a fictional first lady (loosely based on Laura Bush) and the center of a fantastic novel by Curtis Sittenfeld.

Do you ever find yourself thinking about a book or a character from a book you are reading during the course of your day? I know when I start doing this that I am reading what I will soon call a favorite book. I am in love with this story and its characters. Although, not a George Bush fan in any way, I even find myself infatuated with Charlie Blackwell, the fictional prez.

I highly recommend this sweet, thought-provoking book. But beware, my local library had 25 holds on it when I requested it, so it may take a while to get it. Worth the wait, though.

If you've read this book, I am dying to know what you thought of it. I'm only on page 420, though, so try not to spoil it for me(:

fun with photoshop

You might remember this photo of Owen from last year--eating his first ice cream. I am trying to take better photos which is really hard with the crappy point and shoot I have. In an effort to help make some of the pictures I have already taken look better, I've been playing around with Photoshop. Although I have been a graphic designer for what feels like centuries now, I have never been very good at Photoshop (although I did teach a beginning class in it...shhh...don't tell everyone I am a fraud).

Anyway, with a little experience and some awesome help from others on the internet (like this lovely lady) I've been experimenting. I went a little overboard with this before and after, but I am pretty proud of it. What do you think?

What I did in a nutsell:

1. Warmed the overall colors with a warming filter

2. Intensified his eyes by using the dodge tool to bring out more of the color and the brush tool by painting in a little more white in the whites of his eyes.

3. I selected only the boy and the ice cream cup and blurred the background so those two images "popped" out a bit.

Pretty as a picture and suitable for framing...with the exception of the messy face...
