the nativity + serrv.org

i am not a particularly religious person, but i have always been drawn to the nativity scene. some of it may be nostalgia, as my grandmother had a beautiful nativity scene complete with wooden crèche that i found facsinating as a child. i don't have one myself, but i decided this year i am going to purchase one for next season. and that leads me to serrv.org--a nonprofit organization with a mission to eradicate poverty wherever it resides by providing opportunity and support to artisans and farmers worldwide. their catalog/website has some of the most beautiful and affordable handcrafts. among these treasures is the most amazing selection of nativities. i've highlighted a few of my favorites here but be sure to check out serrv.org for yourself. there is something for every style made from every material you can imagine. you won't want to miss it!

happy easter

I didn't want to do baskets this year because I didn't want to end up with two baskets that I don't need. Sure I could save them for next year, but then I would have to store them somewhere and, oh yeah, remember where I stored them when I need them again this time next year. Right. Plus, all of the baskets I saw were hunormous and I didn't want to have to buy a bunch of crap and candy to fill them up. But, I did want to do something to recognize Easter for the boys.

I bought two small craft bags and made these little moustached bunnies for the fronts. I am going to fill them with a cookie and little candy and a matching moustache (go here for tutorial).

You are welcome to use these for your little bunnies. Leave a comment with your email and I'll send you a PDF with two equal sized bunnies and blank name tags.

Happy Easter!

treats for your sweets

I know it hasn't been that long since the gluttony of Christmas came to a much needed end, but I have Valentine's Day on my mind and that always conjures images of sweet treats. I love a box of See's as much as the next girl, but I thought it might be fun to see what else is out there.

The pretty chocolates at my hometown chocolaterie look amazing and come in interesting combinations like fleur de sel caramel, yirgachefe white coffee and orange jasmine tea. Ginger Elizabeth is a formally trained American chocolatier offering an array of chocolate confecions and pastries at her Sacramento boutique. Boxes start at $6 for 12 pieces.

I've become obsessed with homemade marshmallows and these lovelies from Brooklyn-based bakery Whimsy & Spice sound delish in flavors like chocolate, caramel, cardamom and maple. Yum-ski. Mail order available. $6/dozen.

If you're looking for some decadence but trying to stay on the nutritional straight and narrow try these low fat beauties from Holey Donut! That's right, I said "low fat" and "donut" in the same sentence! Just in time for Valentine's day, this all low fat bakery is offering these hot pink numbers--Low Fat Pink Velvet Strawberry Frosted donuts. $12 for 6.

a happy halloween

Prepping for the big day--tombstone making.

O was particularly into it.

And I actually finished a project. I have to say that I am pretty excited about my Happy Halloween banner!

But Halloween is all about the costumes. This photo was taken after the crazy pre-candy begging party festivities ended, so the makeup was a little worn. But he was spooky just the same.

pumpkin time

In anticipation of the Halloween bash, we worked this weekend getting the house decorated. Although we got about 8 great pumpkins from our garden this year, we decided to take a trip up to Apple Hill for some more pumpkins, indian corn and, of course, apples. It was a great day, although Matt and I were pooped from our late night at the reunion (more on that, later).

Apparently, searching for the perfect pumpkin for their room was altogether too taxing for the boys!

But a little pony ridin' perked them back up. It was Owen's first time!
